Nestled in the heart of Nara Prefecture lies Mt. Yoshino, home to the MUJI accommodation MUJI room SAKAMOTOYA. In spring, the mountains are blanketed in cherry blossoms; in autumn, vibrant reds and yellows paint the landscape. Mt. Yoshino offers breathtaking seasonal scenery year-round, and as a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, it invites visitors to explore historic temples and shrines on foot.

Mark Places to Visit with Transparent Sticky Notes
At MUJI room SAKAMOTOYA, guests receive a local walking map highlighting nearby restaurants, shops, temples, and shrines. When a spot catches your eye—whether it’s a lunch stop or a sacred site—you can mark it with MUJI’s transparent sticky notes and write directly on top.
They’re also perfect for marking other pamphlets or guidebooks. Unlike a circled page or dog-eared corner, a note with a written comment helps you remember why that place stood out.

Conquer the hills in comfortable walking shoes
Once you’ve marked your spots, grab your map and head out from MUJI room. Step through the natural fabric noren curtain and you’ll find yourself on the approach to Kinpusenji Temple. The path is mostly well-maintained, but remember—you’re in the mountains, and the elevation varies by several hundred meters.
Some recommended spots require hiking up steep slopes or descending 450 steps to reach a guardian deity. In Mt. Yoshino, comfortable, well-worn shoes are a must. MUJI offers a wide range of easy-to-wear sneakers and footwear. Choose a pair that suits your feet and let them carry you through the hills of Yoshino.

Collect Temple Seals in a Goshuincho
The majestic presence of Kinpusenji Temple’s Zao-do Hall
Just a 10-minute walk from MUJI room lies Kinpusenji Temple, Mt. Yoshino’s most iconic religious site. Founded in the late 7th century by the legendary ascetic En no Ozunu, this temple is the central training ground for Shugendō, a spiritual tradition that combines Buddhism, Shintoism, and nature worship.
Shugendō flourished during the Kamakura to Edo periods as part of Japan’s syncretic religious history, drawing practitioners to sacred mountains like Yoshino and Kumano. Though it declined with the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the faith lives on. Even today, monks carry out rituals and training deep in these mountains.
A Goshuincho, or temple seal book, is the perfect keepsake for your visit. MUJI’s simple gray edition comes in 24- or 48-page formats. For a small donation at each shrine or temple, you can receive hand-drawn calligraphy and seals. Each location has a unique design—making it fun to collect as you go.
